We are far past 40 acres and a mule!
On August 21, 2024, EAT organized 1,000 individuals to march from the West Side Center for Justice to the United Center demanding President Biden to sign an executive order to create a Reparations Commission. This Commission would develop proposals for how the U.S. government will deliver full reparations to Black Americans for the institutions of slavery, Jim Crow, and countless other racist harms this country has done to our people.
Rep. John Conyers Jr. first introduced the Commission to Study and Develop Reparation Proposals for African-Americans Act in 1989. Conyers called it H.R. 40, with the "40" calling out the U.S. government’s unfulfilled promise to freed slaves of "40 Acres and a mule." The bill establishes a Commission to craft a proposal for reparations for slavery and the many harms enacted against Black Americans since.
The bill was revived in 2021 by Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (TX) and has been sitting in congressional committees since. But the clock has been ticking for far too long. We are demanding that the U.S. president make the decision to take the nation’s first step toward justice. Black people are tired of waiting. We are ready to fight!
Now is the time to stand in solidarity with one another and show our collective power. It is far past time for the United States government to face the reality of its racist history. It is time for us to hold their feet to the fire. It's time to KEEP IT 1000!
